A Republican, he served in the North Carolina House of Representatives, representing Madison County, in the General Assemblies of 1937-38 and 1939-40.〔https://archive.org/stream/northcarolinaman1937nort/northcarolinaman1937nort_djvu.txt〕〔https://archive.org/details/northcarolinaman1939nort〕 He served as United States Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina under President Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 through 1961.
